Midwife for Low Risk Clinic - High River
The Primary Care Network presently supports a midwife to work in the Low Risk Obstetrical Group in High River to increase capacity in this area. The midwife works with local physicians rotates call for approximately 800 births per year.
Women’s Health Clinics - Vulcan and Claresholm
The Primary Care Network supports a nurse practitioner is in these communities to increase access to women’s health services such as cervical screening. These positions are based in local regional facilities in Vulcan & physician offices in Claresholm.
Access to the Nurse Practitioner is through the family physician.
Women and Children’s Health Initiative - Eden Valley
A Primary Care Network physician focuses on women and children’s health on this First Nations reserve. The focus is primarily on women’s health including pre and post natal care and immunizations. Programs are administered at the Health Centre on the Reserve.
Access is through a referral from the local first nation’s health care team.
Woman’s Health Screening- periodic health exam
Calgary Rural Primary Care Network is working with the Alberta Health Services- Alberta Cancer Board to promote women’s health screening including cervical screening. A pilot project will use mailings to increase the number of women screened and to evaluate the elimination of barriers to screening by using registered nursing and nurse practitioners in cervical screening. Pilot project resources will increase screening capacity in our area by training local nurses/nurse practitioners in conjunction with physicians in cervical screening. Overall, the project will encourage women to schedule a general health examination at regular intervals.
